The 22-year-old Italian took down the legendary Serb with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win, showing off his top-tier form this season.

Djokovic, at 37, was hoping to join tennis icons Jimmy Connors (109 titles) and Roger Federer (103 titles) in the ultra-exclusive “100 club.”

The goal of hitting that century mark fueled his drive throughout the tournament, especially as he aimed to prove that even in his late 30s, he could still outclass the younger players gunning for his spot at the top.

But despite his 24 Grand Slam wins, a few key mistakes in Sunday's final cost Djokovic the match, giving Sinner the edge in crucial moments and leaving him just short of making history.
