Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich just made marathon history, becoming the first woman to run under 2 hours and 10 minutes.

The 30-year-old crushed the Chicago Marathon course, finishing in a mind-blowing 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 57 seconds. She beat the previous world record, set by Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa in the 2023 Berlin Marathon, by almost two minutes.

Chepngetich, already a marathon legend as the 2019 world champion, was over the moon about her achievement.

“I feel so great, I'm proud of myself. This is my dream come true,” she said after the race. “I've fought a lot thinking about the world record and I have fulfilled it.”

This marks Chepngetich’s third Chicago Marathon win. Last year, she came just 14 seconds short of breaking the then-world record held by fellow Kenyan Brigid Kosgei.

Chicago has become a hotbed for women's marathon records, with four of the five fastest times being set on its famously flat course in the past six years.
